Mesker Park Zoo is now accepting applications for the position of Veterinary Technician.  This is a full time exempt position and includes all of the benefits associated with that (vacation, holidays, health and life insurance, pension and 401(k)…).

Duties: Performs laboratory procedures at Mesker Park Zoo. Obtains and submits laboratory specimens to the laboratory, and compounds, labels, administers, and/or distributes medicines and chemicals under the direction of the veterinarians. Assists in the treatments, immobilization, anesthesia, surgery, post-operative care and/or necropsies of zoo animals and takes and develops radiographs. Prepares surgical packs, instruments, and machines. Orders drugs, supplies, and equipment as needed. Feeds, cleans, and cares for animals in quarantine and the animal health facility. Performs general cleaning of the animal health facility/veterinary office. Keeps animal medical records and monitors preventative and regulatory medicine record system. Cares for infant animals as required. Animal observations as required. Aids in transporting animals. Monitors a parasite/vermin/predator control program. Advises and counsels the zoo staff regarding animal health technology. Assists Director with achieving departmental risk management duties and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Medical Sciences. Knowledge of general characteristics of a wide variety of exotic animals and their needs. Valid Registered Animal Health Technician Certificate issued by the State of Indiana at time of hire. Incumbent should posses good working knowledge of the technical instruments and laboratory diagnostic procedures used in an animal clinic. Incumbent should possess a specialized knowledge of a full range of veterinary medicines, surgery, animal nutrition, dietary requirements and emergency first aid procedures and practices. Incumbent should possess ability to establish record keeping systems to track animal medical records and medical supplies. Possess general knowledge of the local, state, and federal laws concerning animal welfare. Ability and desire to communicate with co-workers and to receive and give instruction. Ability to type. Must work on weekends and holidays as required and have normal color vision.
