ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSAssists the contract veterinarian with clinical procedures, including the preparation of equipment, animal restraints and sample collections.  Maintains the zoo's hospital facility, including the sterilization of instruments, maintenance of equipment and the ordering of supplies.  Performs laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology and urinalysis.  Assists veterinarian in maintaining comprehensive animal information and health records.  Accompanies the veterinarian during inspections of zoo animals; reports any observed abnormal behavior or health problem.  Prepares and maintains animal capture equipment used in the administration of drugs, anesthetics and vaccines.  Administers medications, vaccinations, and tranquilizers to animals under the supervision of the veterinarian.  Utilizes stationary and portable x-ray machines to radiograph animals; labels, develops and files radiographs.  Assists in the development of x-ray techniques for animals; orders supplies and maintains x-ray processor.  Assists the veterinarian in the performance of necropsies; prepares tissue samples for shipment or transports to outside laboratories with the appropriate paperwork.  Assists veterinarian during surgical procedures, monitors anesthesia and keeps anesthetic records.  Maintains the zoo's pharmacy; performs monthly inventory, organization and the ordering of pharmaceuticals.  Operates a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAININGCompletion of an Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a related area from an institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association; and  one (1) year of experience as a Veterinary Technician involving work with exotic animals.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.  Prefer Certified Veterinary Technician or equivalent.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

·         Must possess or obtain Arkansas certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.

·         Must possess or obtain a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License within thirty (30) days of employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

·         This position may require one or more of the following pre-employment screenings:  physical exam, drug and alcohol screening, or background investigation.
