Lindsay Wildlife Museum, a natural history, environmental education and wildlife rehabilitation center located in Walnut Creek, California, connects people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share. The museum houses a collection of live, native California animals, a hands-on discovery room for children, changing exhibits and a wildlife rehabilitation hospital.                                               

THE POSITION:    To provide medical and rehabilitation care of animals in the wildlife hospital and animal encounters department.  Responsible for the initial and continuing treatment of injured and orphaned wildlife (6,000 wildlife rehabilitation cases and 150 captive native California wild animals that are used for educational programming); supervision and training of over 300 volunteers in the hospital and in home care so they can participate in caring for wildlife; running the wildlife hospital professionally; helping the public with wildlife questions and issues.  Reports to wildlife rehabilitation director and works closely with veterinarian and director of animal encounters and approximately 6 other wildlife hospital supervisors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•              Work with volunteers and staff to ensure that all wildlife in our care receive appropriate medical treatment and care.  Supervise hospital and homecare volunteers.

•              Under the direction of the veterinarian and rehabilitation director, examine or supervise the examination of all animals at intake and determine course of treatment for each animal, monitor animals’ daily progress and decide on treatment changes.  Notify veterinarian of cases requiring veterinary attention.  Arrange prompt placement of animals into home care.  Network with other rehabilitation groups to maximize care for animals.  In absence of veterinarian on site, triage animals in consultation with hospital staff and on call veterinarians.

•              Keep accurate records on accession, examination, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and final disposition of all animals (electronic database).

•              Work with other supervisors, veterinarian, interns and volunteers to ensure the highest standards of hygiene, husbandry, medical care, and safety in the hospital and in home care.  Monitor public, staff and volunteers to ensure their safety.

•              Answer phone calls; help public with wildlife issues and questions.  Communicate medical and rehabilitation information accurately to staff/volunteers/public.  Be a positive advocate for the museum.

•              Maintain the hospital in a clean and professional condition, including cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures and work spaces

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is a physically and mentally demanding position.  Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and stand on a concrete floor most of an 8-10 hour day.  Skills needed: be able to draw blood from animals, perform basic laboratory diagnostic tests.  Under the supervision of a veterinarian, be able to take radiographs and monitor anesthesia.  Be familiar with common drugs used in wildlife medicine and be able to accurately calculate dosages.  Effective oral and written communication skills, good teaching skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and foster teamwork between staff, volunteers and the public.  Have great empathy, patience and be able to make difficult decisions.  Must be able to respond to animal emergency circumstances according to approved protocols and provide leadership in emergency situations.  Have a minimum of two years’ experience working with wildlife or exotic animals (preferably with a wildlife rehabilitation program).  Must have at least two years supervisory experience working with both employees and volunteers; completion of basic and advanced IWRC Skills Seminars or equivalent experience, a degree in an animal sciences, biology or medical field is desirable.  At least two years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician is highly preferred.

 

HOURS, BENEFITS & COMPENSATION:  Temporary 6 month position; non-exempt, full time.  Salary range commensurate with ability and skills.
