Wildlife
Care Supervisor $12.00- 14.00/ hour depending on experience, 40 hours a week, Shared weekends and holidays expected. Purpose of Position: Coordinates daily wildlife care at Toronto Wildlife Centre Duties and Responsibilities: In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to: · Fulfills daily care plans of wildlife patients including but not limited to nutritional, caging and medical needs. · Performs examinations and basic diagnostic procedures on incoming patients. Makes euthanasia decisions and performs euthanasia according to policies. Administers medical treatments according to protocols. Maintains animal care records, inputs data. · Moves animals through the rehabilitation process in a timely manner including reassessments at outdoor facility. · Assists the veterinarian and/or vet tech with treatments and surgery as needed. Performs and monitors animals under anaesthesia. Performs laboratory procedures. Takes and develops radiographs. Assists the Veterinarian with patient rounds as needed. · Ensures that cages and facilities are cleaned and maintained daily, feeding schedules are adhered to and other animal care needs are met. · Supervises and trains wildlife care staff, seasonal workers, interns and volunteers. Delegates and ensures satisfactory completion of tasks. Ensures that animals are being handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety. Ensures that protocols to minimize risk of contraction of zoonotic disease are being adhered to. · Drives own vehicle as needed to rescue and transport wildlife. Coordinates and performs animal releases as needed. · Assists the Head Wildlife Care Supervisor in developing species protocols. · Assists with rehabilitation research as needed. Controls over Work: Wildlife Care Supervisors work under the direction of the Head Wildlife Care Supervisor and are expected to work without direct supervision.
Physical Demands: Requirements: · Must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university. Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in biology or wildlife sciences. Two years work in rehabilitation may be considered in place of college degree. · Must have a minimum of six months experience working full time in a wildlife rehabilitation center or at least one year experience working as a veterinary technician, zoo keeper, field biologist or other related field. · Must have excellent leadership skills and have experience managing and supervising staff and volunteers. · Must be skilled in wildlife medicine on a vet tech level or be able to achieve this level with on the job training (be able to take and read x-rays, perform lab work, physical exams, take blood, give intravenous and subcutaneous fluids, prescribe treatment, dose and administer drugs, set fractures through bandaging, perform anaesthesia and assist in surgery). · Must be able to act decisively regarding constantly changing animal cases and situations for which there may be no existing protocols. Must be able to work quickly, efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions. Must be able to handle multiple responsibilities. · Must possess good verbal and written communication skills. · Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis and tetanus will be mandatory. · Must be able to work cooperatively with co-workers and the public. · Must have basic computer skills. · Must be able to represent TWC to the public or other organizations professionall Please submit a cover letter and resume to Emily Meredith via e-mail emilym@torontowildlifecentre.com or mail to:
