Animal Health Technician

Description The Animal Health department is seeking an Animal Health Technician to be responsible for implementing clinical and preventative medical programs.

Responsibilities Implements clinical and preventative medical programs as directed by Director of Animal Health. Performs medical rounds daily. Consults with staff veterinarians regarding condition of animals under treatment. Prepares and administers medications as prescribed by the attending veterinarian. Prepares and sends out samples for analysis. Picks up drugs from pharmacy. Inventories and orders supplies and equipment. Stocks the pharmacy and crash boxes. Compares prices to ensure cost savings. Rotates stock. Cleans and maintains instruments and equipment. Performs various laboratory procedures including basic water quality analysis, blood analysis, collection of bacterial/fungal cultures, serum preparation for send-out and storage, parasitology, urinalysis, and sample collection for cytology. Performs and documents necropsies. Collects diagnostic samples for analysis. Maintains clinical records including daily logs, case histories, and information from staff regarding animal progress and problems. Instructs veterinary preceptees and volunteers as needed. Responds to emergency situations, and in the absence of a veterinarian makes decisions and carries out the necessary and pre-approved procedures. Follows all safety protocols and uses appropriate judgment when working with venomous animals. Capable of improvising when necessary to ensure safety of staff, animals, and equipment. Identifies areas where protocols can be improved to increase the safety for staff, animals, and equipment. Monitors and documents basic water quality parameters as directed by the Manager of Water Quality. Monitor and maintain levels of selected therapeutic agents in aquarium systems established by the attending veterinarian. Comply with all safety protocols established by NAIB and the Center of Marine Biotechnology. Aid in safety training of new staff, interns and students.

Requirements B.A. or 6 years equivalent experience. Completion of an accredited veterinary technical or program or a fisheries biology program is desirable. Experience with animal handling is required.
