Veterinary Technician Los Angles Zoo DUTIES: The Veterinary Technician position is assigned to the Los Angeles Zoo’s Animal Health Center, a state-of-the-art animal hospital. The duties of the position include: daily restraint of animals; assisting Veterinarians with examinations, medical procedures, anesthesia, vaccinations, medications, and necropsies; feeding, cleaning and caring for sick and/or quarantined exotic animals; lifting and transporting dead animals; maintaining the supplies and equipment of the Health Center, including sterilization, surgery, pharmacy, imaging, necropsy and immobilization equipment; and special projects such as tours of the health center and educational talks. REQUIREMENTS: The Zoo’s Veterinary Technicians care for exotic animals. Experience working with exotic animals is preferred. These are physically demanding positions, which require the ability to lift, carry, and push and pull animals, food, grain tubs and bales of hay, as well as restrain animals. These positions require the strength to perform average lifting of up to 50 lbs and occasionally over 50 lbs. HOURS OF WORK: The Los Angeles Zoo is open seven days a week. All Veterinary Technicians must be available to work five eight-hour shifts per week, with rotating days off. The normal work shift is either 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All Veterinary Technicians must also be able to work weekends and holidays.
