Zoo Hospital Administrator

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Manages the administrative functions of the Zoo Veterinary Hospital as outlined in the job responsibilities below. Reports directly to the Director of Veterinary Services. Will take direction from Staff Veterinarians on selected duties and projects, as specified by the Director of Veterinary Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for purchasing, receiving, stocking, and inventory of Zoo Veterinary Hospital supplies and equipment.
- Responsible for maintenance of the Zoo Veterinary Hospital physical campus and equipment; generates and follows up on work orders, maintenance and repair issues.
- In conjunction with the Director of Veterinary Services, develops and monitors the budget for the Zoo Veterinary Hospital.
- Serve as administrative support for the Director of Veterinary Services.
- Coordinate scheduling and logistics for public tours of the Zoo Veterinary Hospital, visiting professionals, students, interns, externs, etc.
- May coordinate shipping of medical samples as requested by the Director of Veterinary Services or Staff Veterinarians.
- Participate, as assigned, in data entry or records management of animal care and/or medical records.
- Responsible for selection, training, development, and performance management of direct report.
- Facilitate the compilation, review, revision, and maintenance of all Zoo Veterinary Hospital operating guidelines.
- If in possession of the appropriate skills, may fill in as a veterinary technician or in the Zoo Veterinary Hospital laboratory as needed and as directed by either the Director of Veterinary Services or a Staff Veterinarian.
- Provide guest/internal client service to Zoo Veterinary Hospital visitors as appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete the duties as described. Organizational skills, materials acquisition, inventory management, computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, MedArks, and other relevant software applications, and a basic knowledge of the workings of a medium-sized medical or veterinary hospital. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once, prioritize, and problem solve. A proactive and positive approach to the job as well as good teamwork skills is essential. Completion of an accredited program in veterinary technician training and status as a registered veterinary technician is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Five years experience in a healthcare facility with progressively more responsibility.
SUPERVISION:
Supervises the Zoo Veterinary Hospital clerk position.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The position may involve considerable physical exertion, such as the climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) and/or assuming awkward positions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution. The position may involve exposure to chemical substances, ionizing radiation, venomous and/or dangerous animals, and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.
PHYSICAL SKILL:
Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; or the ability to make rapid closely coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands.
PUBLIC CONTACT:
Requires good interpersonal skills; interaction with the public, internal clients, vendors, donors, and staff from other departments. A strong appreciation of the role of the animal hospital as a service organization to the animals and the rest of the zoo is required. |
