JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction of the GSTC veterinarian and utilizing
well-defined objectives and guidelines, provides "hands-on"
leadership through knowledge of the disciplines of veterinary medical
primary technical care and a general understanding of sea turtle
rehabilitation. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the
rehabilitation pavilion and veterinary hospital facilities including the
diagnostic laboratory, pharmacy, surgery, radiology suite, and the food
preparation commissary. Responsibilities include planning and
daily/weekly objective setting related to all aspects of clinical care
for the GSTC patients, and coordination of interpretive educational
programs.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinates, directs, participates in, and ensures implementation of
a consistent program of daily clinical and husbandry care for all
animals maintained by the GSTC.
2. Directs GSTC staff in the daily operations of GSTC activities
including animal rescue response, veterinary care, the technical aspects
of applied and basic scientific research, and educational tours.
3. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff (animal care
technicians, aquarist(s) and volunteers).
4. Responsible for the maintenance, safe operation and quality control
of the GSTC rehabilitation pavilion and veterinary hospital facilities
(including: the diagnostic laboratory, treatment area, pharmacy,
surgery, radiology suite, and the food preparation commissary).
5. Participates, when appropriate, enthusiastically in public outreach
and other educational programming including special tours, public and
private education programs, and daily visitor interactions/educational
interpretation.
6. Ensures that all GSTC animal medical records are maintained in
accordance with Georgia State Veterinary Medical Association rules and
guidelines.
7. Performs "on call" duties for animal health-related emergencies
and essential medical treatments 24hr/day, 3-5 days/week and when
necessary.
8. Performs all assigned tasks and responsibilities in a timely manner

9. Communicates efficiently, enthusiastically, and effectively with all
GSTC paid and volunteer staff, the general visiting public, educational
groups, researchers, the Jekyll Island Authority, Jekyll Island
Foundation, St. Catherines Island Center, Georgia Department of Natural
Resources, and other outside agencies.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
11. Reports to the director of Veterinary Services

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in related field (environmental biology, veterinary
technical care, conservation, education, etc.) is required; Master's
or other advanced degrees in related fields preferred. A valid Georgia
Veterinary Technician certification is preferred; Practical experience
as a veterinary technician will be considered an alternative. A minimum
of two years experience in an American Zoo and Aquarium (AZA) accredited
institution or any equivalent combination of education, training, and
experience. Must be a skilled and effective communicator and committed
to the advancement of sea turtle conservation through rescue, research,
and education. Direct experience in wild animal rescue,
rehabilitation, research and public education is preferred.

STARTING SALARY: $36,592 - $38,421
