Veterinary Technician

The Birmingham Zoo is seeking applicants for a full-time veterinary technician position. The individual will be within the veterinary sciences department, which consists of 1 staff veterinarian, 1 Hospital Manager, 1 full-time and 1 part-time keeper. The veterinary technician should be energetic, self-motivated and work well with others in a team atmosphere. This individual will work under the direction of the hospital manager and veterinarian and assist in all aspects of medical care for the animal collection. The veterinary hospital manages patient care, surgery and quarantine wards. Duties include (but are not limited to) administering treatments, assisting in immobilizations, diagnostic and surgical procedures, radiography, additional diagnostic procedures, necropsies, animal restraint, sample collection, drug dispensing, inventory maintenance, hospital facility and equipment maintenance, participation in conservation and research projects, assisting with hand rearing of animals, preparation before and sanitation following surgical procedures and assisting with record keeping and filing of medical data. Interested individual must be able to lift 50 pounds. Benefits package offered. Salary is to be commensurate with experience. The applicant should have a veterinary technology degree from an AVMA accredited program and a minimum of one year clinical experience working in a zoological institution with a wide variety of species. Candidates must have the ability to become registered in the State of Alabama within 6 months of time of hire. Also preferred for this position are a minimum of 3 years experience and a strong background in performing in-house laboratory testing which include, hematology (both automated and manual), serum chemistry, cytology, urinalysis, and parasitology exams. Experience in avian and reptile hematology is preferred. A working knowledge of MedARKS computer medical record keeping system is preferred.
