Senior Veterinary Technician
Alaska Sealife Center
This
position is responsible for assisting with and performing supportive and medical
tasks to ensure the health and welfare of all animals housed at the Alaska
SeaLife Center.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Provides
assistance to the Veterinarians as required.
·
Assists in all
medical procedures as needed including anesthesia, endoscopy, surgery,
radiology, ultrasound, dentistry, biopsies, necropsy, catheterization, and fluid
therapy. Provides lead in anesthesia of birds, mammals, and fish.

In the absence
of the veterinarians, provides routine medical care and communicates with staff
and on-call veterinarian and designated supervisors as needed. Responds to
emergencies, performs physical examinations, carries out treatment, collects
diagnostic samples, and dispenses or administers medications as directed by
Veterinarians.

Assists in
training and quality control of hematology and clinical chemistry components of
Central Lab. Coordinates with other Veterinary staff to track, ship and
maintain biological samples.

Provides
support for rescue and rehabilitation endeavors as needed.
·
Assists with
supervising volunteers and interns within the Veterinary Services program.
Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, and delegates
authority. Assists with setting performance standards for staff.

Maintains a
current veterinary supply inventory and coordinates procurement. Prepares
purchase orders and check requests within Veterinary Services budget.
·
Cross trains
with other animal care personnel to provide emergency animal husbandry care as
needed.
·
Assists in
maintaining all veterinary medical records and logs and tracking of laboratory
and veterinary care expenses to projects and grants.
·
Maintains the
veterinary clinic, surgical suite, necropsy room, hematology lab and associated
areas. Ensures areas are cleaned and controlled as appropriate. Ensures
quality control and routine maintenance of medical, surgical, diagnostic and
clinic laboratory equipment. Coordinates with service contractors and
facilities department for repairs and upgrades.

Assists in
development of animal health care protocols, staff and researcher orientation
and training, and in presentations and preparation of education and visitor
materials related to animal health and medical care.

Attends
professional meetings and represents ASLC before various professional
organizations. Participates in continuing education programs and in the
development of new skills that augment and improve animal medical care and
laboratory services.
·
Maintains
on-call status after hours and on weekends as needed.
Requirements include:
Must be a graduate of an
accredited school of veterinary technology,
Veterinary Technician Certificate and three years experience in duties similar
to those listed above required. Knowledge in all phases of captive wildlife and
aquatic animal husbandry and healthcare. Ability to be organized,
self-motivated, and possess a strong desire to see the completion of projects.
Ability to speak and write effectively and be comfortable meeting new people and
interfacing with diverse interests.
Preference given
: experience with Word, Excel, and Access; knowledge of basic research
methods and data collection techniques including the use of basic biological
data collection equipment; knowledge of applicable analytical laboratory
equipment; hazardous materials training and/or lab safety training; SCUBA
certification, preferably as a Scientific Diver, and ability to function as a
diver/dive tender.
This is
