General Information:

The Buttonwood Park Zoo is located in New Bedford, MA in Southeastern Massachusetts approximately 60 miles south of Boston, 30 miles east of Cape Cod, and 40 miles west of Providence, RI. We have typical New England October weather 55-75 during the day and 45 at night.  In October the region is often treated to an “Indian Summer”.  Please check accuweather.com to get the forecast for the week of the conference.

Wet Labs:  Thursday - October 2nd 2008

The wet labs will be held at Buttonwood Park Zoo and transportation will be provided from hotel to the zoo and back. There will be lunch options available for those who may be attending an AM and PM lab. Once your registration is in, you will receive confirmation on your labs.

 

Fish Biology and Examination for Technicians  
Presented by Pilar Gibson, New England Aquarium

  Time offered: 1:30pm-4:30pm

   Limited to the first 20 registrants

This lab will cover the following objectives: To become familiar with the basics of fish biology and anatomy. To                             
experience and perform physical exam on a fish, including common diagnostics.  To further investigate fish
anatomy and pathology by performing a fish necropsy.

  **Participants will need to have medical insurance and sign a waiver.
      You will also need to bring your own scrub top, basic dissection kit and wear closed toe shoes.

Scientific Writing
    Presented by Sarah L. Poynton Ph.D., John Hopkins University School of Medicine

   Time offered: 8:30am-12:30pm

   Limited to the first 40 registrants

   This workshop will focus on three main elements: principles of effective scientific writing, abstracts, and basic
editing skills and strategies.  Many examples will be used, and participants will have the chance to critique work,
and do in-class exercises.  The four topic groups for the AZVT proceedings will be discussed: Clinical Pathology,
Case Studies, Hospital Procedures and Innovations and Updates.  All participants will receive a detailed
Workbook.

Thermography of Elephants
Presented by Dr. Scott T. Willard and Anna B. Chromiak, Remote Animal Monitoring Solutions (RAMS)

Time offered: 1:00pm-4:30pm 
  
Limited to the first 40 registrants

   The information that the participants gain will be an understanding regarding the process of thermal imaging. 
Participants will gain an understanding of the information obtained from the interpretation of thermal imaging

Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace: Friday – October 3rd, 2008 from 5pm-11pm

It’s the seat of American history and the site of one of America’s most famous shopping and dining experiences.  For over two hundred and fifty years, the marketplace has played and integral role in the life of Boston residents, so check out the gateway to the city at www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com.  Busing will be provided to and from the hotel but dinner is on your own that night, so remember to bring money.

Silent Auction: Sunday – October 5th, 2008 ~ Zoo Day ~

Please do not forget to bring items for the Silent Auction! This event is held to help support the Laurie Page-Peck Scholarship Fund, so bring items that will fetch a high bid and even a small bid, because it all goes to a good cause.
You can hit up your zoo’s gift shop, local suppliers or your favorite local stores for items they would be willing to donate. Remember we are a big group with many different tastes and interests so all is welcome. Every year there are different items that always cause a big down to the minute pencil war and bring in a lot of money for the scholarship, maybe it will be the item you bring.  Also, if you know what you want to bring but don’t want to carry on the plane, ship it to the zoo ahead of time.  Please write on the box ATTENTION: Tina DeMedeiros.

We are ONLY able to accept CASH or CHECKS for the Silent Auction- No credit cards will be accepted. 

Banquet: Monday – October 6th, 2008 from 6pm – 11pm

The banquet will be on Monday evening at Bittersweet Farms Restaurant.  Situated on a 29-acre farm dating back to the 1920’s, Bittersweet Farms provides an elegant country atmosphere and perfect setting.  Semi formal attire is tradition.  Dinner will be served buffet style and a cash bar will be offered so remember to bring money.

Post Conference Trip:  Tuesday- October 7th 2008

New England Aquarium Whale Watch: www.neaq.org/visit_planning/whale_watch/index.php.

$40.00/person includes transportation, Whale Watch and a behind the scenes tour at New England Aquarium.
Lunch on your own

Our destination is Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary, a rich feeding ground for whales, dolphins, sea birds and other marine life.  This area is home to several kinds of large whales, including humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales, as well as pilot whales and the critically endangered right whales.  White-sided dolphins may also put in an appearance.

8:00 am. - Leave the hotel
9:30 am. - Arrive at NEAQ  Behind the scene tours will be scheduled.
1:00 pm. - Board boat for Whale watch
1:30 pm.-  Leave  NEAQ wharf

     4:30 pm. or 5:30pm.  –Return from whale watch.  Trips run from 3-4hrs depending on whale sightings

     6:00pm. -Leave for hotel. Note: you want to stay another night at hotel and depart on the 8th

New England Aquarium

Founded in 1969, the New England Aquarium is a global leader in ocean exploration and marine conservation.  The Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston, with over 1.3 million visitors a year, and a major public education resource.

Post Conference Trip- New England Aquarium (NEAQ), whale watch/visit www.neaq.org.  You can download a copy of the whale watch brochure off their website. This will be an all day trip. 9:30-12:30 WW/ 1:30-5:00 visit.  It takes about an hour to get to Boston.
                                 
Hotel- Hampton Inn/Westport- Room Rates (King/Double) $79 plus 9.7% tax.  Includes complimentary breakfast with one rotating hot item daily. The conference rate code is CZV.

Airport Information- The Hampton Inn/Westport is located 27 miles from TF Green Airport in Warwick, RI and 55 miles from Logan International in Boston, MA.  Trust me when I say it is much easier to fly into TF Green than Logan!  Unless you are visiting family, friends or have no other choice.   Please remember you are coming to Massachusetts but want to fly into Rhode Island. (Looking into transportation to and from hotel). The airport code is PVD.
